To install the roof wall flashing above the builder bent the top edge of the flashing into a 90 degree lip about 2 cm in width. Damaged or improperly installed roof flashing especially around the chimney or dormer is one of the most common causes of roof leaks. The horizontal part of the flashing will vary depending on the type of roof covering material. That lip is then set into a reglet or groove in this case cut into the mortar joint of the brick wall above.

If there were no flashing against these walls water could slowly drip into the crevice between the wall and the roof and potentially into the home. A gable roofis a type of roof design wheretwo sides slope downwardtoward the walls and the other two sides include walls that extend from the bottom of the eaves to the peak of the ridge. This oversight has been going on for years and costing property owners many thousands of dollars.

Except where walls are brick the vertical part of the sidewall flashing should extend up behind the exterior wall covering just like with headwalls. A sidewall is a junction between a wall and a sloped portion of a roof.
