Darlington npn transistor 1 50 or a relay 2 5 i like the darlington as it is cheaper and solid state and easier to wire up but depending on your specific garage door a relay may be a better solution genie garage doors have a lower contact voltage and a darlington can not bring it close enough to ground to.

There was already a 120v wall outlet and all the items needed to keep the wemo maker in a climate controlled environment.

If you want to know when the garage door is open or closed then you will need them.
All day daily keep in mind this may be somewhat counter intuitive for those unfamiliar to normally closed switches.
